DDA held their 2011 International Celebration of Culture Exhibition on 26th November at the Cao Yang Community Centre in Pu Tuo district’s Xing Shan Road.

The cultural event, which was attended by an international audience of around 300 guests, celebrated a diverse mix of art and culture, including performances by some of the top artists in the fields of martial arts, Kunqu Opera, Peking Opera, Chinese painting, calligraphy, flamenco and street dance, plus stage and comedy arts.

The event, also supported by the Cao Yang Community Centre (曹杨社区文化中心) and Pu Tuo District local government, was a chance for proponents, performers and enthusiasts of art and culture to gather together, enjoy some wonderful demonstrations of skill and artistry, catch up with old friends, meet new ones, appreciate our diverse global cultures and value the opportunity for intercultural exchange and mutual appreciation.

The event started with some traditional Chinese folk dancing by Ms. Sun Guo Mei, no stranger to DDA’s exhibitions, but perhaps more familiar for her Taiji and push hands performances.
This year, we were extremely privileged to feature a performance by veteran stage comedian Mr. Yang Yi Xiao, first in an impromptu comedy double act (双簧)with Rose Oliver, followed by a solo standup performance and his double-handed calligraphy demonstration.

We were also treated to some amazing martial arts demonstrations by some of the top practitioners and masters in Taiji, Xing-Yi, Bagua, Lan Shou, Wing Chun, push hands, sparring, dual straight and broadsword forms and Liu He Ba Fa or Water Boxing; featuring Master Zhu Yu Cheng, Master Liu Ji Fa, Shou Guan Shun, Zhang Rong Feng, Zhang Xi Xing, twins Shen Xing Zuo and You, Ming Hang Wushu Club, Master Wang Sen Lin, Master Chen An Tian, Master Qu Shi Jing, Master Chen Yu Tong, Master Ma Bao Guo, Master Xue Hong En, Master Yan Cheng De, Master Wan Yong Nan, Master Gu Yong Fa, Master Shen Chao, Master Zhu Jian Li and Master Hong Min among others, plus demonstrations by Master Wang Ming Bo and several groups of his local and international students.

We were also very fortunate to have an amazing display of traditional Chinese painting by renowned international artist Mr. Xu Zhi Wen, rewarding us with an ink painting of lily blossoms and bamboo, accompanied by a beautiful performance of the Taiji straight sword by Ms. Hong Min.

Ms. Cao Hui and Mr. Tu Zhang Sheng shared their skills and artistry in Kunqu and Peking Opera, delivering renditions from several famous Chinese operas.
Mr. Alex Bomb treated us to a lively and acrobatic street dance performance and the whole show was wrapped up by a stunning flamenco dance by professional dancer and teacher Ms. Ana Chiu.

Following the exhibition, Rose, Master Wang Ming Bo and veteran DDA exhibition co-host Mr. Yu Huan Pei accompanied the VIP guests and performers to the Shanghai No.1 Hotel and Restaurant on Zao Yang Road to a delicious banquet lunch, to thank the performers for their marvelous performances and give everyone a chance to exchange ideas, make new friends and enjoy an afternoon of fun and conversation in the afterglow of some amazing artistry by our wonderful artists and performers.
