We recently held our first “Shanghai Away Day” for English language learners from several different Universities in Shanghai.
The students, who were from several different provinces within China as well as some foreign students, were mainly from university freshman and sophomore years, plus some high school students.
Accompanied by Rose Oliver, an English teacher from Shanghai University and Shanghai University for Science and Technology, the group visited Pudong’s Century Park, where they enjoyed a picnic, a tandem bike tour around the park and several rides at the amusement area within the park.
The fun “play” day was organized by Rose Oliver to offer students wishing to improve their oral English skills a forum to chat and mix with other like-minded students and give everyone a chance to chat informally in English, make new friends, improve their confidence in talking with others and have a fun day out.
The “free” activity was held over the May Day holiday and proved to be a great time for everyone involved, allowing everybody to gain greater interest and enjoyment in learning English.
The relaxed and informal setting helped the students see learning a language in a new light, making it be a natural sensation to talk and chat using everyday English expressions that can’t be learnt in the classroom.
We hope to organize a second “Away Day” over the summer holidays; anyone wishing to join us on our next “English Play Day”, should contact Rose Oliver for details or to reserve a space.
