Two western guests staying in Shanghai contacted DDA’s Rose Oliver to arrange some classes
in traditional Chinese ink painting.
Our clients, Cristina and Patricia, spent two evenings being instructed in traditional ink painting;
first learning the rudiments of calligraphy and brush strokes, plus how to hold and control
the brush.
Later, they began working on painting a variety of subjects, including the classic “four flowers”, in
Chinese ink paintings. Building up from the basics of bamboo stems and leaves, to orchid flowers,
leaves and cherry blossoms.
The two ladies very quickly mastered some of the techniques and by the end of the second class
produced some stunningly authentic-looking artwork!
Patricia and Cristina had a wonderful time. Thank you to Mr. Cai for his excellent teaching and
preparation, and to Professor Luo for his wonderful translation!
