5 Element Qualities of Grasp the Bird’s Tail Sequence

Ward Off Energy (Beng/Peng Jing)

The element of Peng energy is FIRE. The quality of Fire means that the outside of the fire is the hottest part. But it is not a rigid hard force, where someone has a very tense or stiff outside resistance to their arm/body. Rather like the quality of fire itself, the flames are very hot but have an insubstantial quality to them, plus the heat is generated from the inside. So where your arm for example touches the person, they feel some quality of energy, backed up from within, but not a rigidity to the limb that they can control.
The inner part of the space within the arms, if one makes a circle with the arms, is not empty but has a sense of energy within it. Like the fire, the Peng energy is backed up by the intention of power within.
The arms should still have a soft quality to them, like the flames licking at the surface of an object.

Rollback Energy (Liu Jing)

This is the element of METAL. The idea of rollback is like molten metal flowing down. So the opponent will feel a kind of heavy liquid force flowing down upon them, which they cannot resist. Plus rollback must not be directed backwards into your own body, but to the outside of the body, eg. 45 degrees to the side of you.

Press Energy (Ji Jing)

The element for Press is WOOD. This is a feeling of a large tree slowly, steadily growing forward and outwards, from your own root (the ground) through and out the opponent. They will feel they cannot resist this inevitable force growing and projecting through them.

Push Energy (An Jing)

This element is WATER. Water has a quality of softness and great power. So push will have the quality of a large ocean surrounding and enveloping the opponent so he feels like a boat floating in your sea, then like a large ocean wave you crash down on him, issuing your power into him.

Central Equilibrium (Zhong Ding)

This central balancing energy has the element of EARTH. All the movements, whether they are Fire, Metal, Water, Wood, all have the balancing Earth element within them. Just like all your body movements will have the balancing quality of central equilibrium. Your body must always be in balance and centered in order to be stable and to exercise your movements. Without this centre and balancing force, your movements will be out of keel and ineffective.
