Titled “Witnessing Excellence: 40 Foreigners Recount 40 Years of Shanghai’s Reform and Opening up”, the book features 40 foreigners detailing their experiences during China’s 40 years of pioneering and groundbreaking changes from different aspects, such as foreign investment, urban development, health care, banking, insurance, and cross-cultural exchanges.
The book is a fruit of a reporting series jointly launched by Eastday and the Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (SPAFFC). Hailing from the U.S, the U.K, Japan, Italy, Canada, Pakistan, Turkey, France and other countries, the interviewees sat down with Eastday reporters and talked about their Chinese stories, especially in Shanghai, while witnessing the tremendous transformations of the country.

As representatives of the 40 figures in the book, Noyan Rona, chief representative of Garanti Bank’s Shanghai office, and Habib Ur Rehman, a foreign community security volunteer in Shanghai, and Rose Oliver, English professor at Shanghai University and recipient of the Shanghai Magnolia Silver Award, were present at the book launch seminar. With deep emotions, they talked about their feelings about accepting the interview and their opinions on the reform and opening up policy.
