The Mayan Calendar – Two Shanghai University Students’ Views

?
Synjer:
It was a spectacular lecture by Victor H. Garza (Gao Shan) about the Mayan Calendar on 26th
November 2012, organized by DDA. He firstly introduced pyramids to us, as the basic knowledge
of learning about the Mayan Calendar. There are 9 levels in each pyramid and it adds up to 365 days
in all. Then, Victor showed us the genuine Mayan Calendar, which can be easily confused with another
calendar from the Aztec period, the last dynasty in Mexico. In addition, he summarized a rich variety of
views about 2012 from different people including the elders of the Mayan people.
In conclusion,?there’s no need for us to worry about the mythical end of the world in 2012!
I still remember their Mexican humour that said maybe they just ran out of stones, so the end is scheduled
for 2012.
It was a very interesting and excellent presentation. I’ll certainly listen to the Feng Shui speech
that DDA are organizing on 10th December, also with Victor.

Hailey:?
Is the 23rd of December 2012 really the end of the world? My rational thinking tells me: NO!?
I can’t definitely demonstrate why I hold this opinion, but perhaps my lack of knowledge of the
Mayan Calendar is one of the reasons. Fortunately, a gentleman from Mexico, Victor H. Garza,
revealed an all-sided and objective slant on the Mayan Calendar to us, according to his research
on the Maya and their culture, for many years.?
Victor introduced several theories, including some ridiculous and some entirely rational. As theories,
they must have their own supporters. However, from my point of view, none of them can
completely convince me.?
Regardless of the unique understanding that modern people hold towards the Mayan Calendar,
the calendar itself has a precise, scientific base and amazing charm. As yet, we haven’t fully
discovered the wisdom from this treasure, but it was great listening to Victor’s lecture and
having a more in-depth perspective on it.?
