We recently helped host Hong Yue Cultural Exchange Centre’s regular “Free-Taster” evenings, this time for the Gu Zheng or Chinese Harp, at their Yan Dang Road Centre, near Huai Hai Zhong Road.
The melodious sounds of the Gu Zheng were really soothing and a delight to the ears, a real boon in this noisy city, full of the constant beeping of car horns!
Hong Yue Cultural Centre frequently organizes such taster evenings and events, to introduce traditional Chinese culture and in particular the benefits and pleasures of traditional Chinese art forms like music and calligraphy.
It was a really enjoyable evening, with some of the Centre’s current Gu Zheng pupils as well as new students competing in a “fun” contest, to play a delightful tune “Yu Zhen Chang Wan”, famous for its complex, yet beautiful and flowing melody.
I had a great time and it was also a great opportunity and challenge for me personally to host the event almost entirely in Chinese – a real test for my music vocabulary!
Anyone wishing to join the Centre’s future taster sessions or any of their other activities please contact DDA for details.
