On Friday 5th March, Professor Qu Shi Jing of SORSA (Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association) conducted a lecture and demonstration of Taiji Quan for an audience of SORSA’s members and special guests, including the wives of the consuls from the Foreign Embassies in Shanghai, plus other westerners living and working in Shanghai.

Rose Oliver was specially invited by Professor Qu to hear his fascinating lecture (in English) about some of the theories and concepts behind Taiji’s philosophy, as well as how to execute the applications according to Taiji’s inherent concepts of Yin and Yang and softness overcoming hardness.

The lecture and following demonstration by Professor Qu was extremely interesting and for myself personally, offered some new and helpful advice for my practice; I’m very grateful to Professor Qu and SORSA for inviting me and for giving everyone a great chance to know more about the art and make it more accessible to those unfamiliar with its background and philosophy.

Professor Qu’s pushing hands demonstrations and discharge of energy and power (fa jing) demos were exceptionally impressive and his own story of 60 year’s practice of Taiji throughout some very difficult personal experiences and serious illness, were a testament to the diligence of Professor Qu and the very real health benefits of Taiji.

The event was very well received by the audience and provided a relaxed and amiable cultural and social exchange.
