Rose Oliver was invited to take part in a special programme for CCTV XinWen News Channel, highlighting the coming EXPO and how it will affect the local community, as well as international residents and guests in Shanghai.
The programme which was broadcast on Saturday 6th March on both CCTV Xin Wen and CCTV1, showed Rose and Kieran Dicker, also from the UK and only just arrived in Shanghai to work at the Czech Republic’s Expo exhibit, visiting a local fruit and vegetable market to look around and buy some of the vegetables needed to make traditional Chinese wonton.
?
They then proceeded to visit some of the protected apartment buildings in Shanghai in Jing An District and lived in by several generations of families, many of whom have been there for 40-50 years. The apartments themselves are around 90 years old and were handed over to local families by the Nationalist Party for the families and their next generations to live in.
Later Rose and Kieran were welcomed into the home of one of the families where they learned how to make wonton, as well as chat and enjoy lunch together with the family and neighbours of this very close knit and especially friendly neighbourhood.
Both Rose and Kieran were treated with great kindness and made very welcome by the host family, sampling some really delicious fare, as well as some homemade Yang Mei Bai Jiu!
??
It was a great chance for the local families and international guests to meet and feel part of one big Shanghai family.
Thank you to the family and their friends, as well as representatives of CCTV Xin Wen for putting the activity together and for making us feel so welcome.
