Rose Oliver was recently invited to appear on Dong Fang television’s Olympic Sport special.

The series of programmes will cover a wide variety of sports and disciplines, featured in this year’s Olympics, including traditional sports such as table-tennis and boxing as well as demonstration sports such as Taiji Quan.

Rose, who was invited to take part due to her background and interest in Chinese martial arts especially Taiji, visited the Shanghai Specialist Sports Education Institute on Old Humin Road. There, she got the chance to meet some of the young pupils attending the Institute practicing their acrobatic drills and martial arts moves, as well as join in the “fun” training with Sifu Guo Liang of the Long Wu Gongfu Academy and Mr Ci Ming of Dong Fang TV Station’s broadcasting team.

The pupils of the Institute, although young, were all very dedicated and serious practitioners and it was an honour to meet them and see their earnest practice of an art we all love.

The day was great fun and an interesting look into the more acrobatic and dynamic styles of Shaolin martial arts and traditional weapons forms; and Sifu Guo’s patience and expertise in taking us through some of the forms and drills was also impressive.
